A Dialogue of Nostalgia & Modernity in the Delta.
Location: Khulna, Bangladesh
Status: Design Development
Year: 2026
Concept: The Return to Roots
Set in the quiet urban fabric of Khulna, this duplex residence is a love letter to the Bangladeshi homes of the 90s, reinterpreted for contemporary living. The design moves away from the sterile gloss of modern apartments, opting instead for a palette that feels lived-in, tactile, and grounded.
Design Philosophy: Deshi Modernism
We anchored the design with Cast-in-Situ Terrazzo (Mosaic) flooring; a material that cools the home naturally and evokes a deep sense of nostalgia. This cool grey base is warmed by extensive use of Teak and Walnut woods, paired with traditional Rattan (Cane) weaving on cabinetry and furniture. The result is a home that feels timeless, where the play of light through patterned curtains creates a sanctuary from the humid tropical heat.
The dining space acts as the pivot point of the home, connecting the open living area with the sculptural staircase. Sunlight washes over the terrazzo, highlighting the texture of the cane-back chairs.
Framed views. Whether through art or architecture, green is a constant thread that ties the interior to the landscape outside.
The kitchen celebrates the corner window, a typical feature in Khulna architecture. We kept the cabinetry low and warm, using fluted glass upper cabinets to keep the space feeling light and airy.
The Master Bedroom is an ode to tradition. A classic black four-poster bed (Palongko) anchors the room against a calm olive-green feature wall.
Storage as art. The wardrobe features floor-to-ceiling cane panels, allowing clothes to breathe in the humid climate while adding texture to the room.
A quiet corner for reflection. The vintage study desk sits by the window, where patterned curtains filter the harsh afternoon sun into a soft glow.
Every angle is considered. The view from the bed highlights the symmetry of the console and the play of light on the floor.
